Ancient Egypt
“The Land of the Pharaohs” holds a fascination for many people in our post-modern world with its allegedly non-historical outlook. This course of twenty-two sessions explores the origins of the Egyptian State, the Pyramid Age, the “classical” Middle Kingdom, and the great empire phase of the New Kingdom before its decline into the Late Period. The course introduces Egyptian literature for each period, and some attention is given to contacts with Biblical history.
Outline
Term 1: The Old Kingdom. The foundation of the Egyptian state, the era of the pyramids, decline into the First Intermediate Period.
Term 2: The Middle Kingdom. Emergence from chaos under Theban rule, the classical period under the Twelfth Dynasty, decline and invasion by the Hyksos rulers.
Term 3: New Kingdom Expansion. Expulsion of the Hyksos, empire of Thutmose III, the Akhnaten heresy, Tutankamun, the Ramesside period and decline.
Term 4: The Third Intermediate and late Period.
